There are many examples of people who changed their career path, who dared to follow their heart.I personally thank Mr. Rowan Atkinson for changing his career path from Electrical Engineer to a comedian and making us laugh by his visual comedy as “Mr. Bean”. Nobody else could have done it that well. Yes, our very cute and funny Mr. Bean alias The Rowan Atkinson is an engineer by qualification.
Atkinson was educated at Durham Choristers School, St. Bees School and Newcastle University, where he received a degree in Electrical Engineering. He did his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering at The Queen’s College, Oxford.
Rowan Atkinson starred in a series of comedy shows for BBC Radio 3 in 1978 called ‘The Atkinson People’. It consisted of satirical interviews with fictional great men, who were played by Atkinson himself.
Rowan Atkinson is best known for his use of physical comedy in his Mr. Bean persona. Atkinson’s other characters rely more heavily on language. Over-articulation of the “B” sound is his better known comic devices. Atkinson suffers from a stammer, and the over articulation is a technique to overcome the problematic consonants.
Atkinson’s visually based style sets him apart from most modern television and film comics, who rely heavily on dialogue, as well as stand-up comedy which is mostly based on monologues. His talent for visual comedy has led to Atkinson being called “the man with the rubber face”.
A very interesting thing to tell, Mr. Rowan Atkinson played numerous numbers of roles including that of a doctor, fisherman, customs officer, Mr. Bean etc. but there are no records of him playing an engineer’s role. We salute his art of making others laugh that too without speaking anything.
Here is the sketch of Mr. Rowan Atkinson aka Mr. Bean by the artist Mr. Mohammed Reeyaz.
